National Memory Day celebrates the power of poetry and creative writing for people affected by memory loss. The benefits of written and spoken word to people with dementia and those who care for them will be celebrated at the launch of the first National Memory Day in London on 30th June.
On the day of the launch Director of The Poetry Archive Tracey Guiry spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Today Show presenter John Humphries about her mother’s dementia and how poetry had a positive effect on re-establishing a dialogue between her mother and family.
Ian Sherriff, Plymouth University’s Academic Partnership Lead For Dementia talked about his experiences of working with Memory Cafés across the country and how recited poetry from the past can form an important part of reconnecting – not only with words but also in rebuilding relationships with loved ones.
